Sciatic Pain Treatment

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica refers to nerve pain that begins in the lower back and radiates through the hip and down the leg. Sciatic pain is caused by a problem with the sciatic nerve which originates in the lumbar region between spinal vertebrae. Considered the largest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve is formed by smaller nerves from its origin in the spinal column to make up a large nerve that passes through the buttocks and extends down the back of each leg.

Sciatica Symptoms

Sciatic nerve pain can be mild or it can be severe to the point of debilitating. Symptoms of sciatica include numbness, a “pins and needles” sensation, and pain that starts in the hip and travels down the leg. Pain or aching in the buttocks, ankle, and foot are also symptoms of this condition.

Causes of Sciatica

The most common cause of sciatica is a slipped or herniated lumbar disc that presses directly on the nerve, resulting in irritation and inflammation of the nerve. Other causes include irritation of the nerve from bone, spurs, tumors, muscle, injury, and infection in and around the lumbar spine.

Sciatica Treatment

Treatment for sciatica spans the spectrum of medicine. Bed rest, alternating application of ice and heat, medication, stretching, physical therapy, TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), injections, and in severe cases, surgery are all methods used to treat sciatica. Another very effective treatment for sciatica is chiropractic care.

Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) medicine regularly treat those affected with sciatica. With great results, our Castle Rock, CO chiropractor specializes in treating sciatica. Chiropractor training involves adjustments, or spinal manipulation, to treat several disorders, to include sciatica. These adjustments help free restricted movement of the spine and restore misaligned vertebrae to their proper position. This treatment can help reduce nerve irritation responsible for inflammation, muscle spasms, pain, and other symptoms related to sciatica, bringing much needed relief.
