The benefits of acupuncture have been known in eastern medicine for millennia. Commonly used to alleviate pain, acupuncture involves the act of inserting extremely thin, almost hairlike, needles at strategic points on the body.
Chinese medicine describes the technique as essential for balancing the flow of energy or life force. This energy or life force is known as “qi” or “chi” (chee) and flows through pathways (known as meridians) just under the surface of the skin. To help restore balance to the body needles are inserted specific points along the meridians stimulating nerves, muscles and connective tissue increasing blood flow and releasing your body’s natural painkillers.
Why is acupuncture important to overall health?
Widely understood in eastern cultures, and becoming more accepted in western, a body is susceptible to imbalance due to illness, injury, poor lifestyle habits (such as little exercise and poor eating habits). When the body is not working at optimum levels, the body’s qi is out of balance. By incorporating acupuncture your health and well-being practices you are restoring balance by reinvigorating and restoring the body’s natural energy flows.

What to expect during acupuncture
There are acupuncture points situated throughout the body. And, though you may experience pain or symptoms in one part of your body, the point to treat that pain may be in a different part of the body. Your practitioner will explain the general sites for treatment. If appropriate, a gown, towel, or sheet will be provided to preserve your modesty. Once situated on a padded table your practitioner will insert very thin needles in your skin. Five to twenty needles are used in typical treatments. Little if any pain is experienced during insertion and any manipulation of the needles during treatment. Sometimes heat or mild electrical pulses are applied to the needles to further stimulate and restore your body’s energy flows. In most cases the needles remain in place for ten to twenty minutes. After acupuncture many people feel relaxed and others feel energized after treatment.
